During the recent National Road Yard Sale week, I wanted to go east of Zanesville to find some of the goodies on sale there. I didn’t have time to make it then, so I’m featuring some of the permanent antique shops and flea markets in this area. They are well worth a visit.

I’ve visited a number of these places over the years and found lots of items to add to my various collections. I have collections of soda bottles and glassware, postcards, books, pocket knives, coins, vinyl records, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars and more. My collections are not worth a lot of money; most of what I collect reminds me of my growing up years.

There are more than just antique stores along this stretch of US 40.

The National Road and Zane Grey Museum is located in this area at 8850 East Pike, Norwich. This museum features a 3D diorama showing how the National Road was built, artifacts of the road, and a section featuring the life of Zane Grey, author of hundreds of Westerns, many of which were made into movies. The museum also has an impressive exhibit of local pottery.

Here are some of the retailers in this area:

• Susie’s Favorites, 2500 East Pike. This gift shop, known for a vintage sign reading “POTTERY,” specializes in custom silk arrangements and keepsake remembrance. The store carries gifts such as wind chimes, floral arrangements and unique clocks. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.
• Lucky Find Antiques, 5700 East Pike. Open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m., this store specializes in art glass including Fenton, mid-20th century items and more.
• White Pillars Christmas House, 7405 East Pike. Huge assortment of Christmas décor and items in an 1882 house with many rooms, each containing a variety of treasures. Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., closed Sunday.
• Zanesville Pottery, 7395 East Pike. Since 1945, Zanesville Pottery has provided a wide selection of pottery items from bird baths to artisan glassware, both domestic (including Fiesta dinnerware) and overseas suppliers (including Polish pottery). Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday year round.
• German Farms Market, 120 Arch Hill Road. Stop in for home-cooked lunch specials like chicken and noodles, coney dogs and macaroni and cheese. You can find farm-fresh deli meats and cheeses, freezer beef, pork, lamb and much more. Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Peace and Plenty, 100 Arch Hill Road. Boutique and gift shop with local vendors. Something for everyone, including clothing, home décor, gift baskets and more.
• White Pillars Antiques, 7525 East Pike. This former motel features plenty of art glass, pottery, oil lamps and lamp parts as well as a full line of antiques and collectibles inside and outside the store. They advertise as the area’s largest Fenton glass retailer. Open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Matthews Antiques, 7527 East Pike. An antique mall with large selection of quality antique furniture from every era; cases of elegant glassware and local pottery from years gone by. Open 7 days a week.
• Casa Bella Gifts, 7529 East Pike. Recently reopened in a new location, this shop features stylish womens’ clothing, accessories and shoes, specialty gifts and garden items.
• National Road Flea Market, 8645 East Pike. This large store with over 50 vendors has a huge selection of antiques, collectibles and vintage items, including home décor, vinyl records, dolls, glassware, pottery, furniture, toys, kitchen items and much more. Closed Monday and Tuesday, open daily remainder of week 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
