Three Poems

By Dusty Tires

I’m more of a non-fiction and prose writer. But one of the members of the Kirkersville Writers Group that I attend periodically sends out poetry prompts and I can’t resist a good challenge.

So here are some poems that I wrote recently in response to prompts, and some artwork that sort of goes along. . .

The Dark Trail (Aug. 11, 2025)

The rider got down from his horse slowly.

Something in the darkness had spooked his mount.

Now his senses were fully alert.

He silently drew his Colt from a worn leather holster

Then he froze all motion and barely breathed.

Rocks in the trail beneath his boots

Crunched ever so slightly

He stared hard into the dark night

But couldn’t make anything out.

The hiss of an arrow’s sudden flight

Split the heavy air

And caused the cowboy to grunt in pain.

He fired his pistol, which lit up a face in the shadows

In a flash of flame and gunpowder smoke

He couldn’t tell if he had hit his foe or not.

But for years afterward, the pain in his shoulder

Would remind Zane Grey that life was fleeting.

ZOOM (Aug. 21, 2025)

I used to think of ZOOM like Superman flying to the rescue

Or Batman when he would POW! BIFF! BOP! the bad guys

But now ZOOM means opening up my laptop

Checking my wi-fi connection

Finding the little meeting link in my calendar or email

And trying to open up the link, but it doesn’t work

So I do what the instructions on my screen tell me to do

And try pasting the link into my browser

Hey, it’s working – I can see them but they can’t see me

My microphone wasn’t turned on

Now it’s working but my mute button was on…

Hey, how is everybody?

Can you hear me now?

What, the meeting is over?!

Next time I’ll call Superman to figure out this ZOOM!

Late summer’s dance (Aug. 29, 2025)

Fireflies dancing in miraculous flight

Their tiny bodies light the night . . .

“Please don’t stop with summer’s wane

With change to leaves and thorns and bane

Just unite together in the ground ‘til next spring

Sleep ‘til lightning bugs again do their thing.”

    1. Hi Kathy, I did most of the drawings many years ago as a teenager and was very introverted. I didn’t want anyone to see them. I rediscovered these drawings a couple years ago and realized they are meant to be shared. I had a lot of fun choosing the best ones and colorizing them, just using the Paint app on my laptop.

    1. Cool! I just totally made up the part about the cowboy being Zane Grey. Just cuz Zane Grey was from around here, I thought it would make an interesting twist at the end. Thanks.
