Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs is quite possibly the largest and most diverse ice cream destination in Ohio. There’s something for everyone here.
The story of Young’s Jersey Dairy started in 1869 with the building of its big red barn by Young family relatives. The dairy farm was purchased by Hap Young shortly after World War II, and the family farmed 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres. They grew grain, raised hogs, and milked cows; in 1958 the family farm began selling milk to the public.
In 1960, a new Dairy Store was built, and Youngs began dipping ice cream. Expansions followed in 1966 and 1968, adding space for a bakery, cheese, sandwiches and snacks. More expansion followed in the 1970s through the 1990s, as the farm doubled its sales and production spaces and added parking, kitchen area, restaurant seating and much more.
The Dairy Store at Young’s offers a full array of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and a wide selection of homemade ice cream, shakes and sundaes. Year-round ice cream flavors include Cow Patty, Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake and Sea Salty Double Caramel. Seasonal flavors are also offered.
In addition to good food, homemade ice cream and frozen treats, customers can enjoy wagon tours of the farm, two mini-golf courses, a petting zoo, a driving range, batting cages, a large slide, a playground and train ride for children, and a new carousel that features – you guessed it – cows.
Young’s offers on-site cheese and ice cream production, with observation windows to watch employees at work. There is also a cheese shop that sells cheese as well as memorabilia, homemade treats, décor and more. The facility can seat more than 250 people inside and another 250 on an outside patio.
One might say that people could spend an entire day at Young’s Jersey Dairy and stay, well, until the cows come home.
Young’s Jersey Dairy is located at 6880 Springfield-Xenia Rd, Yellow Springs; phone (937) 325-0629.
