Get there early for the best selection at Kauffman’s Country Bakery

One could say that an Amish bakery isn’t really Amish if it has electric lighting, telephones and a website, and I’ll concede that point.

But Kauffman’s Country Bakery in Bunker Hill, just up the road from Berlin, Ohio, is as close as one can get without resorting to ye olde waterwheel power to run the shop.

Actually, there are lots of places in Ohio’s Amish Country that advertise or hint as “Amish” but are actually more like “Amish-style.” And for purists, Kauffman’s is probably among them.

I’m not really one to quibble on such points, and for my crew, a trip to Amish Country isn’t complete without a stop at Kauffman’s, one of the largest bakeries in Amish Country.

With dozens of varieties of baked goods, there’s a good chance that if you have something in mind, you’ll be able to find it on their shelves. For example, though stollen and fruit cakes are popular in the holiday season, you can find them year-round at Kauffman’s.

But if you have something specific in mind, get there early in the day! Chances are it won’t be available in the afternoon.

Of course, Amish fry pies are always available – they have 11 varieties — as are donuts, including my brother-in-law’s favorite cream sticks (some call them “long johns”) in chocolate, Bavarian cream, peanut butter, raspberry and maple cream varieties. They also have muffins, bear claws, cinnamon and pecan rolls, cookies, apple fritters, Danish, breads and cakes.

Kauffman’s also houses a café with coffee drinks, 16 flavors of Hershey’s ice cream (including no sugar-added Turtle Sundae) and hot and cold sandwiches, including breakfast sandwiches.

The retail shop also has a wide selection of bulk food items and souvenirs.

Kauffman’s postal address is 4357 US 62, Millersburg, but the actual retail location is far from Millersburg – it’s about a mile or so north of Berlin at the Township Road 77 intersection, just across the street from Heini’s Cheese Chalet (Bunker Hill Cheese).
