Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe customers show their devotion in gummy ways

Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe, an institution in Greenville, Ohio, since 1934, has a unusual claim to fame. Some might say it’s even a bit too personal.

The outside walls of the unassuming brick structure at 125 N. Broadway are literally covered with wads of used chewing gum. The wall is so famous its name, “The Gum WallTM,” is trademarked.

“We don’t really know why the gum started but it’s here to stay,” according to the restaurant’s website.

It’s possible the rite got started when customers simply had to get rid of their gum in a hurry before digging into a Maid-Rite.

Maid-Rite’s menu is simple and has not changed much since the 1930s. The signature Maid-Rite Sandwich is a “loose-meat” sandwich made of 100 percent pure beef with choice of mustard, pickle and onion – but never ketchup.

According to media sources, the sandwich is similar to a Sloppy Joe but without the sauce. The recipe of spices and flavorings used is a secret passed down from the original owner, Louise Maher.

The menu also includes Cheese-Rite (add cheese), Big Jim (add ham and cheese), ham and cheese, ham, chicken salad and egg salad sandwiches.

Customers can also order a variety of chips and fountain drinks, sodas, beer, milkshakes and ice cream.

The restaurant has a small dining room as well as a drive-through window; phone (937) 548-9340 to order ahead.
