Community theatre groups thriving in Ohio

By Ken Drenten

If you’re looking for a great way to spend an evening and support the local community at the same time, find a local community theatre group.

Community theatre thrives in large cities and small towns throughout Ohio. Groups like these provide affordable entertainment and cultural experiences, involving people from their communities. You might even find yourself interested in volunteering to help or auditioning for a role.

The Ohio Community Theatre Organization supports community theatre groups, providing resources and educational opportunities. There are more than 80 member community theatre groups in OCTA in nine regions of the state.

Dusty Tires now has a page where you can find links for show schedules and events and to find out more about each theatre group. Here are a few of the groups listed:

Curtain Players (Westerville)

Licking County Players  (Newark)

Footlight Players (Coshocton)

Playmakers Civic Theatre  (Port Clinton)

The Harlequins, Inc.  (Sandusky)

Twin Masks Performing Arts Center  (Twinsburg)

Wolf Creek Players  (Norton)

Black Swamp Players  (Bowling Green)

Apple City Players (Jackson)

Chillicothe Civic Theatre

  1. Boy, I wish there was a blog like this for North Florida. And, before you suggest that I create one, I am volunteering for my local Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI at the University of North Florida) and that keeps me pretty busy!

    1. Terry, thanks for the compliment! With all the things to do in North Florida, it would not surprise me that something like this exists only in a different format.

      1. They have lots of outdoor things to do, but not so much on theatre. Others have mentioned coming from communities that have theaters like the Drexel that play Sundance-like movies, but there is nothing like that here. Not many small theater places either. Bigger on music, though.
