Ice Cream Shops & Stands

Toft’s Dairy Ice Cream Parlor in Sandusky offers scrumptious flavors.

We Ohioans love our ice cream! That’s why Ohio is home to hundreds, maybe thousands of ice cream shops and stands. Every community has at least one, and usually several. Here are some of them — you probably know of more (we’re just scooping the surface here). Many drive-ins and stands are closed during the winter.

In addition, Ohio can claim several large ice cream companies, such as Graeter’s Ice Cream (founded in Cincinnati in 1870), Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream (founded in 2002 in Columbus) and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream (founded in Youngstown in 1945) that distribute their products regionally and nationally, or have numerous retail outlets throughout the region.

Confused about what’s an “Ice Cream Stand or Drive-In” versus an “Ice Cream Shop?” They’re very similar and usually serve many of the same menu items. This blog labels it an Ice Cream Shop if there’s inside seating, while a Drive-In or Stand indicates very little or no indoor seating. If you don’t find your favorite here, it may be listed under one of the alphabetical lists of Drive-In Restaurants.
