What’s so special about these grocery stores? They may carry unique items, they have been around a long time or they have other uncommon aspects. Several of them are grand-scale urban markets that preceded the shopping malls. Also included are butcher shops, bulk cheese and meat vendors and bulk food stores, most prevalent in Amish areas.

Amish-Area Bulk Food Stores and Markets– There are many bulk food and “bent and dent” grocery stores in Amish Country (primarily Holmes, Wayne, Stark, Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties). Here are some that we know of, and we’ll add to this list as we find more:

Canal Market District – The Canal Market District is rooted in history, culture, and local bounty. East Market – East Market is a recently developed market house in Columbus’ near eastside. The market has an eclectic collection of independently owned restaurants, bars and food retailers including a butcher shop, green grocery, cheese shop and beer and wine shop. Findlay Market – Findlay Market is Ohio’s oldest surviving market house structure, built in 1852. The market house tower bell, rung at the start of each market day, was brought from Cincinnati’s Pearl Street Market when that facility was torn down in 1934. IGA Grocery Stores – The Independent Grocers Association (IGA) was founded in 1924 to bring family-owned, local grocery stores under one brand. IGA stores offer full-service groceries, produce, bakery, meats, deli and more. There are more than 40 locations in Ohio, mainly in smaller towns. The company’s website has a store locator.

The McConnelsville Kroger store is possibly the chain’s smallest, at least in Ohio.

Kroger – The Kroger store in McConnelsville is reputed to be the smallest Kroger store and perhaps one of the company’s oldest stores in the state. The store opened at this location in 1968. Lynd Fruit Farm Market – Established in 1919, Lynd Fruit Farm has been a destination farm market experience for more than 50 years for families and school groups. Mom Wilson’s Country Sausage Mart – Mom Wilson’s, a landmark on U.S. 23 between Delaware and Marion, started in 1959 with sausage sales from a garage. Mowery Cider Mill – Mowery Cider Mill has been family-operated since 1901 using a cider press patented in 1883. The cider mill uses the oldest commercially operated press in Ohio. They also use a family recipe of a mixture of locally grown apples. The mill and market are open from mid-August until December 31, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily (close at 6 p.m. after time change). Mowery’s offers fresh cider (by gallon, half-gallon, quart and pint), apples, apple butter, caramel corn, caramel apples, popcorn, honey, syrups and more. The mill accepts orders to press apples at customers’ request as well, and visitors are welcome to watch the historic cider press in operation.
