Gem & mineral mining and shops

A wide variety of gemstones can be found at rock shops around the state, such as Gemini’s Eclectic Emporium in Zanesville, or you can find places to mine your own gemstones and minerals.

You can find relatively rare minerals and gemstones in Ohio if you do some research, get the right tools and equipment, and prepare yourself with patience and persistence. You must also have a permit from the state of Ohio, available free of charge from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Some of the easiest places to find interesting minerals “in the wild” are streambeds and the shorelines of larger lakes, especially Lake Erie. If you want to dig a little deeper, there is more to be found.

At least 55 mineral species can be found in Ohio, including colorful flint, glacial erratics, concretions, plant and animal fossils and even small quantities of gold, according to the ODNR’s Division of Geological Survey (DGS).

Flint, the state’s official gemstone, can be found in a number of locations in eastern and southeastern Ohio, mainly in an area of eastern Licking and western Muskingum counties, near the famed Flint Ridge State Nature Preserve.

Find out more about mineral collecting at the ODNR/DGS website.

One of the richest deposits of flint and quartz can be found at Nethers Farm Flint Quarry, 3680 Flint Ridge Road, Hopewell, near Flint Ridge Nature Preserve. Gem hunters can pan for gems using a sluice, search for gems in a creek bed, or explore the farm’s many trails and gardens. The farm’s rock shop sells jewelry made from gems found on-site. Learn more about Nethers Farm at their Facebook page.
