The Melody Drive-In Theatre east of Springfield on US 40 opened in 1947. It was closed in 2016 and was torn down in 2022 to make way for a housing development.
You can still load up the family in warmer weather and head for drive-in auto theatres, which boomed from the 1950s into the 1970s. There are still a few of these remaining, and most of them now boast digital projection and sound (via your car radio) and full concession stand menus. There has actually been a bit of a resurgence in drive-in theatres in recent years, with a couple of new businesses started.
Outdoor Dramas
Another way to enjoy theatrical events in the outdoors is to attend an outdoor drama, typically running from June to September. Ohio has three major outdoor dramas, all of them long-running and all high quality: “Tecumseh!” in Chillicothe, “The Living Word” in Mansfield, and “Trumpet in the Land” in New Philadelphia.
The Living Word Outdoor Drama is a nationally recognized drama about the life of Jesus Christ. Ohio’s only outdoor passion play has been running since 1975. 6010 College Hill Road, Cambridge (740) 439-2761.
Tecumseh!, the story of famed Shawnee leader Tecumseh as he struggled to defend his people and homeland, has been performed each summer since 1973. Since then, some 3 million people have viewed the production at Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater. 5968 Marietta Road, Chillicothe (866) 775-0700.
Trumpet in the Land is Ohio’s official state play and longest running outdoor theatre production (begun in 1969). It brings to life the tragic but inspiring story of David Zeisberger and his Christian Deleware followers as they struggled to preserve their peaceful settlement despite the growing violence of the Revolutionary War. 1600 Trumpet Drive NE, New Philadelphia (330) 339-1132.
