Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant is housed in an unassuming-looking storefront along Main Street drag in the bustling touristy Amish town of Berlin.
People who live in the area locally know it as the place to eat. Since 1938, the small restaurant has had hearty home-cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner, daily specials, sandwiches, salads and 15-20 different pies to choose from depending on what’s in season.
Breakfast menu items include the BW Breakfast (two eggs, home fries, sausage gravy, choice of sausage, bacon or ham, toast and coffee), The Wreck (breakfast haystack with biscuits, home fries, eggs, choice of meat, cheese and veggies, with sausage gravy on top), as well as eggs any way you like them, pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy and more.
Lunch and dinner items include hot roast beef sandwich, chicken, roast beef, sirloin steak, country fried steak, ham, sausage, fish, liver & onions and more. Desserts include ice cream sundaes and their many varieties of pies, including pecan, black raspberry cream and many more.
Boyd & Wurthmann’s history goes back to 1938, when Paul and Mary Hummel opened a grocery store known as Hummel’s Market. The original store was on Main Street in Berlin, two buildings east of the current location. The store offered groceries and a locker service for customers who did not have refrigerators and freezers.

Mary Hummel and her two sisters served homemade pies and sandwiches from the deli counter to serve in addition to the grocery.
As the business continued to thrive, customers began requesting more food and pies made at the deli. The store added several small booths in the front and a small lunch counter for customers. That original green counter, built in 1940 with seating for nine — is still in use today and remains a local favorite.
In 1945, Hummel’s Market was purchased by Herman and Byrl Wurthmann and Byrl’s brother and sister-in-law Dale and Mary Boyd, who renamed the business to its current name.
The demand for home-cooked meals grew, prompting a need for more space. In 1958, the restaurant expanded into a building just two buildings east of the grocery, its current location. The owners continued to operate as a store and restaurant.
The Boyd and Wurthmann families owned and operated the restaurant and grocery for the next 40 years. In the 1970s, the business space was expanded to include 14 tables, a counter, five booths, and one special round table that’s a favorite among locals. In 1984, the owners retired; the grocery store closed and the restaurant continued, changing ownership several times through 2004.
That year, Dennis Mullet purchased the restaurant and continues to do so today. As Boyd & Wurthmann approaches 100 years of serving the community, the second generation of the Mullet family has stepped into ownership.
Boyd & Wurthmann Restaurant is located at 4819 E. Main St. (SR 39), Berlin (330) 893-4000. Hours are 5:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday.
