When I was a young lad, my family trod up and down snow-covered hills somewhere in central Ohio to cut down a Christmas tree. We would take turns with axe and saw until finally my father took down the tree once and for all.

The tree would be tied to the roof of our black 1962 Rambler Cross Country station wagon, loaded up and taken home for display in the living room.

This tradition continues to repeat itself at many homes in Ohio thanks to a healthy supply of evergreen farms for the holiday season.

Timbuk Farms near Granville in Licking County is one of the oldest and largest Christmas tree farms in central Ohio. The first crop of trees was planted in 1952 and the farm now spans 300 acres.

When Timbuk was first started, Granville was quite a drive from Columbus. So, a drive to the farm was like a trip to the proverbial Timbuktu, a place in the middle of nowhere. Thus, the farm was named “Timbuk.”

Timbuk offers a garden center with seasonal decor for sale, holiday activities for kids, visits with Santa and more to make the experience of finding and cutting the perfect tree a memorable one.

An even older tree farm is Davies Tree Farm, also in Granville in Licking County. “The Schmidt family that started Timbuk used our family’s tree planter to plant their first trees,” said Bill Davies. “The Davies family planted their first crop of trees no later than 1937.”

Davies Tree Farm is a sprawling family-owned farm that in addition to a huge variety of trees, offers pine boughs for grave blankets, friendly cows and more. The farm is open every day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Timbuk and Davies may be great choices, but there are many more tree farms within easy driving distance of central Ohio. This is almost certainly only a partial list.
