The Homestead Store is a former grain elevator built in the late 1800s that has been a family-run bulk food, specialty food and health supplement store in the Indian Lake community for more than 30 years.
The store carries bulk food and grocery items, baked goods, canning and baking supplies, family farm raised beef and other meats, a variety of cheeses, candy, pickles, jams, jellies and preserves, herbs and spices, nutritional supplements, vitamins, essential oils, locally grown produce, locally produced maple syrup and honey, and heirloom garden seeds.
The building is like stepping back in time with its solid wood beams, walls, floors and grain chutes from its original use as a grain elevator. We visited the store while camping at Indian Lake State Park; it makes for a wonderful side trip when you’re visiting the Indian Lake area.
New Hampshire, the village where The Homestead Store is located, was laid out in 1836, with a post office in operation since 1855. The village, located between the Indian Lake area and Wapakoneta, has about 150 residents.
Only a few miles away from The Homestead Store is the J.H. Manchester Round Barn, a magnificent barn on SR 385 between Roundhead and New Hampshire. The barn was built in 1908 by Horace Duncan for farmer Jason H. Manchester. It is the largest round barn in the state and is the largest round barn east of the Mississippi River. The structure is located on private property.
