Whitmer’s General Store & Pizza is a mixture of the old and the new. Located in the charming little Amish-area town of Winesburg, the store is a combination deli and grocery store, pizza shop and general store with antiques added in for good measure.

We have visited Whitmer’s during our camping trips to Ohio Amish Country. The store is the kind that locals visit regularly for lunch and quick bites, a few items of grocery items and picking up pizza orders.

But you can spend a lot of time at Whitmer’s just looking at everything in the store, including the antique items displayed throughout the store and along its walls.

The structure was built in 1901 as a hotel and saloon, known as the Winesburg Hotel, with a stagecoach stop and livery stable in a barn behind the building. The business was converted into a grocery and hardware store in the early 1920s, following Prohibition and the advent of the automobile.

The store also served as the community post office and the center of daily life in rural Winesburg. The store became Whitmer’s General Store in the mid-1960s and added the pizza business in 2000.

Handmade specialty pizzas and broasted chicken are the featured menu items at Whitmer’s, along with deli sandwiches, sub sandwiches, wings, Jo Jo’s broasted potatoes, salads, ice cream and other treats.

On the store and deli side, Whitmer’s has local Amish-made meats and cheeses, all the grocery and snacking staples you need plus a great selection of bulk foods, dry goods and supplies.

Whitmer’s General Store & Pizza is located at 2105 Main St., Winesburg (330) 359-5001.
